William Maclay - Vermont Architects and Planners
Choices in Sustainability
Our Experience

For over 37 years, we have been leaders in environmental design. We are experienced in commercial, institutional, planning, historic preservation, multifamily and single family residential projects. All of our projects meet the highest levels of environmental performance. Six projects either are, or are anticipated to be, LEED Gold or Platinum rated projects. Currently a 17,000 square foot field house at the Putney school and a 3,625 square foot residence (under construction) will both produce more total energy than they consume. We believe that the Putney School Field House will be the first net zero school building in New England and likely in the northern areas of the US.

William Maclay Architects & Planners has received numerous awards for excellence in design and environmental innovation. This includes Vermont AIA, NESEA, Vermont Governors award for Environmental Excellence, Efficiency Vermont, and others. We are a professional corporation offering standard architectural services, feasibility and planning studies, space planning, historic preservation services, site assessments, environmental and permit consulting. WMAP has offered professional services nationally since 1981.

Bill Maclay, the founder and president of William Maclay Architects & Planners, attended college in the 60's and like many others at the time was disturbed by social inequity and environmental problems. He pursued architecture as a career in order to make the world a better place. In 1970 he committed to using renewable energy to create a non fossil fuel based future.

In 1971, Bill moved to Vermont to develop, design and build one of the first renewable communities in the US. In the early 70's he designed and built innovative renewable and energy conserving projects that have been exhibited and published internationally. In the late 70's and up until 1981, he worked for other firms and then began his practice, both with other partners and as a sole practitioner.

In 1981, Bill began his current practice which has grown in size as well as diversity and complexity of projects. All projects since 1971 have been focused on innovation in environmental design. Project types have expanded from planning and single family residences to multifamily residential, commercial, and institutional projects.

Bill has lectured or taught at many colleges and universities. He has a B.A. from Williams College and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a past President of the VT Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has served on the Board of Directors of the VT Businesses for Social Responsibility, The Yestermorrow School in Waitsfield, The Mad River Valley Planning District Steering Committee, and the Warren Planning commission. Throughout this time Bill has been a teacher, lecturer, and educator at colleges, universities, and conferences focused on environmental design. Bill and the firm have continuously been involved in research on all aspects of environmental design including sustainable design, indoor air quality, building science, material selection, and related issues.
