Choices in Sustainability
Wind NRG Partners, LLC Phase 2 - Hinesburg, Vermont

The second NRG building, anticipating a LEED-Gold certification rating, whose grand opening was November 1st improves upon the first building completed in 2004 and helps create a campus like setting on the outskirts of the village of Hinesburg, VT. At 31,000 square feet it is slightly smaller than the first but through many lessons learned from the first it is a smarter, more energy efficient and a more durable building.

The building features a super-insulated building envelope, 63 KW of solar photovoltaic, two wood-pellet boilers, and a radiant heating and cooling system. Several notable innovative design features make it more green than the first. Among improvements are an open-loop, ground-source cooling system drawing water from two nearby 100-ft wells and feeds it through radiant tubing, producing significant energy savings and a simpler system to operate than the first. The building also has thicker walls and cellulose insulation, making the building 50% tighter and more energy efficient than the first. It also has a greater variety of workspace from large open office areas, walled offices, to shared conference rooms and more private "phone booths" for quieter work interactions.

The heart of the second building has greater day lighting through more effective use of clerestory windows and skylights and greater integration of floor art to promote employee wellness and productivity. Small floor tiles created by local artists dot tastefully colored polished concrete floors providing sometimes lively, satirical and philosophical commentary on our times. Greater attention was paid to outside spaces and courtyards for employees to gather for various occasions. One courtyard has a full size labyrinth pattern inscribed in bluestone to encourage peaceful reflection and walking.
