Choices in Sustainability
Wind NRG Partners, LLC Phase 1 - Hinesburg, Vermont
LEED Gold Certified, Exterior Nightime, PV units, Pond - Renewable NRG Partners Headquarters Phase 1 - Hinesburg, Vermont - Maclay Architects

NRG manufactures wind-monitoring equipment and has outgrown their current facility, which is a typical steel building. One of their goals for their new 40,000 SF building was to utilize renewable energy to supply all of their own yearly energy. Equally, but more important to them, was building a facility that is productive, pleasant, and satisfying for their employees and visitors.

William Maclay Architects & Planners was selected to assist them in achieving their goals. We worked with NRG to generate a light filled core "Cafe" area, reflective meeting spaces at the east and west ends of the building and a connecting internal "street"; all places that enhance daily work. Use of day lighting was maximized in the design of the building. The exterior building envelope was designed for durability, energy performance, light, view, and aesthetics. Natural ventilation was incorporated to minimize cooling. A wood pellet heating system provides warm radiant floors in office and production areas for comfort and worker well-being. Optimized indoor air quality was incorporated into mechanical systems, design, and materials selection. On an annual basis all electricity will be provided by photovoltaics. A spring 2004 completion is anticipated.

For those interested in a closer look at the building, NRG offers guided tours of the manufacturing facility.

A case study for the facility was produced by Efficiency Vermont in 2005. Additionally, the project and firm were featured in the May 2005 edition of Builder/Architect.
