Maclay Architects provided a schematic building design for a new library to replace the current library additions in Shelburne, Vermont. The current building consists of an historic 1920’s town hall with multiple additions. The library initially proposed renovating the current building and adding 6,000 square feet of additional space. Through the design process, the team determined the poorly constructed, disconnected additions, along with the desire not to occupy the town hall with library functions warranted the construction of a new building. This new building will accommodate growing programmatic and staffing needs, improve accessibility and better establish the library as a community cultural center. The addition seeks to balance street and community presence with historic sensitivity in this downtown community.
