Mad River Valley Planning - Waitsfield, Vermont

The Mad River Valley is located in one of the highest and most scenic portions of the Green Mountains in Vermont. Farms and historic villages lie in the lower portions of the Valley. Despite the location of one of the major ski resorts in Vermont, the Valley has retained its scenic character. Rising taxes, pressure for development and the decline of agriculture all threaten the scenic character and quality of life in the area.

As a resident for over thirty years and member of the Warren Planning Commission and three town steering committees for ten years, William Maclay has been an active participant and leader in planning the future of this area. As a planning commission member, he was involved in drafting zoning and sub-division regulations, adapting tax stabilization provisions, and implementing farmland preservation programs.

As a consultant to the town, he drafted the town plan, successfully represented the town in contested Act 250 cases, and directed pathway planning as well as joint public/private sector planning associated with the ski area development. As a member of the town steering committee, William Maclay was involved with the review of the ski area's Environmental Impact Statement and overall proactive valley-wide planning efforts to accommodate growth and retain the unique quality of the area.
