Design Challenge

The Deerfield Valley Transit Association (DVTA) is a non-profit corporation providing public transit services to southern Vermont. They needed a new facility to house office space, bus maintenance, and bus-washing facilities for the MOOver transit system.

Approach

An existing building was demolished on their site in Wilmington to make way for the construction of a new, super-insulated building. Sited near the banks of the Deerfield River, the building exterior follows in the Vermont agricultural building tradition and functions as a visual anchor for the end of the village. The client prioritized utility and durability. Windows, cupolas, and dormers provide extensive daylighting to both the office and maintenance wings. Barn boards salvaged from the site were re-purposed as wainscoting in the office wing.

Outcome

The building accommodates a variety of programmatic functions within an efficient and durable structure.
