Design Challenge

After completing a feasibility study, Circus Smirkus decided to move forward in developing a permanent location for their summer camp. The first phase of the planned development consisted of renovations to an existing home and barn on the property, and the construction of two new seasonal dorms.

Approach

The existing house and barn were renovated to accommodate staff housing and a dining hall. Nearby, two new dorm buildings house up to 96 campers. Each dormitory is organized around a main entry which serves as a lounge and activity space for campers. Wings to either side of the entry lead to pods of campers, each with a unique common space and an adjacent counselor dorm room.

Outcome

Construction of the facilities was completed in time for the summer camp season, when Circus Smirkus takes on about 600 students.
