Design Challenge

Circus Smirkus wanted to evaluate a potential site as a permanent facility for their summer camp program.

Approach

The plan separated work into two anticipated phases, with the goal of ultimately providing accommodations for both summer and winter camp programs. An overall campus plan located practice and performance tents and outlined plans for both new construction and renovations to the existing buildings. Locations for two large performance tents and a third practice tent were designated on the site for outdoor summer practice. An existing house and barn would be repurposed as staff housing and a dining hall. Two new summer dormitories buildings were planned to house up to 96 campers, with winter dorms constructed later to house around 45 campers. A coach’s dorm would accommodate 25-30 coaches and staff members, while a new activities hall would provide a basketball court, and yoga and dance facilities. A conservation easement protects the majority of the site which will remain undeveloped.

Outcome

Upon completion of the study, Circus Smirkus elected to proceed with a first phase of development on the property.
